More than 70 percent of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa depends on forests and woodlands for its livelihood; one fifth of rural families’ daily needs come from forests. Woodlands and forests supply approximately 60 percent of all energy. Forest-related activities accounts for a large part of the GDP of most of the continent’s countries. The project estimates that forests cover billion ha, or 48 percent of the land area ( billion ha) in the tropical rain forest, moist deciduous forest, and hill and montane forest zones. These forests constitute 30 percent of the land area within the tropical region ( billion ha) and 86 percent of the total tropical forest area (

IUCN’s forest work tackles the role of trees and forests in building resilience to climate change in several ways: Combatting deforestation and forest degradation in areas of high biodiversity and cultural significance, such as primary forests and World Heritage sites. This helps conserve the benefits that people and societies get from forests, including forest carbon stocks and . Ndoye and Kaimowitz () look at the influence of macroeconomic and agricultural policies, market fluctuations and demographic changes on the humid forest zone of Cameroon between and To capture deforestation, they use increases in perennial crop area and in the combined area of annual crops.

Tropical forest of Africa represents 18% of the world total and covers over million km2 in West, East and Central Africa. The bulk of tropical forests in Africa are found in West and Central . Many studies have stressed the importance of trees to rural households. Few, however, have focused on actual numbers and densities of trees in different land-use systems. Based on community-level participatory research in six communities, semi-structured household interviews and full-farm fruit tree inventories, this study aims to understand farmers’ tree-planting strategies.

Dry forests near the forest‐savanna boundary form a distinctive sub‐type as a result of occasional encroachment by litter fires which have become more common in the 's. Evidence is presented to suggest that many parts of the forest zone in West Africa may have been subject to fires most often in the dry forest types.

In fact much of the agricultural belt lies within the dry forest zone. The forests continue to serve as a reservoir of land onto which agriculture expands. Most of the agriculture in Africa is. Most of the forests in Africa are in Central and Southern Africa, while the proportion in West and North Africa is very limited.

In terms of sub-regional forest cover, North Africa is the least forested with only about 7% of its land area classified as forests. On the other hand, Central Africa with 44% of the land under forests is the most.Author: Publisher: ISBN: Size: MB Format: PDF, ePub View: Get Books.
